Cisco Certification: The OSI Model, Part I

To conquer the Introduction To Cisco Networking exam, and to begin the process of becoming an expert network troubleshooter, you have to master the OSI model and learn what happens at each of the seven layers.

In this three-part series, we'll examine each level of the OSI model, paying particular attention to the details that will help you pass the CCNA exams and give you the foundation you need to become a true networking professional.

We'll start at the top layer, the Application layer.

It won't surprise you to find that the Application layer is the OSI model layer where most end users have interaction with said applications. Passing the CCNA exam is all in the details, though, and you need to know what happens at the Application layer, as well as the common and not-so-common applications that run at this layer.

The Application layer's tasks include identifying the remote communication partner, ensuring that the needed resources for communicating with that partner exist, and user authentication. If you're prompted for authentication, you're most likely at the Application layer of the OSI model.

Keep that in mind if asked to identify Application layer protocols. I've noticed that CCNA candidates tend to identify Telnet as running at the Application layer. That's an understandable misconception, since the first thing you enter in Telnet is an IP address, and it's often used to communicate with a router. However, keep in mind that Telnet is an Application layer service, not a Network layer service. You've got to authenticate to Telnet to a Cisco router in the first place, remember!

Other common applications that run at Layer 7 are Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP, port 25) and File Transfer Protocol (FTP, port 21).

In short, if an end user is interacting with a program, especially if they're being prompted for authentication by a program such as Telnet or FTP, they're working at the Application layer of the OSI model.

Let's take a look at the Presentation layer.

Layer 6 of the OSI model is the Presentation Layer. While we don't have a great deal of interaction with this layer, you need to know what happens at this layer to pass your Intro and CCNA exams.

The main purpose of the Presentation Layer is making sure that the communication that will be seen at the Application Layer is presented in the appropriate format.

That's all well and good, but what does it mean? J Have you ever opened a document with MS Word and gotten screens and screen of garbage? That's a presentation layer problem - the program being used to open the document is unable to present the data in an appropriate format.

The three major tasks of the Presentation layer:

1. Compatibility with the operating system.

2. Proper encapsulation of data for network transmission.

3. Data Formatting (ASCII, binary)

Encryption and compression of data is also handled at the presentation layer.

Let's keep working our way down the OSI Model. Next up, the Session Layer!

The Session layer of the OSI model basically acts as the manager for the entire model. Some have called it the PHB (Pointy-Haired Boss) of the OSI model if that helps you remember its role, that's fine with me!

The Session layer establishes, manages, and tears down connections between applications. The Session layer uses port numbers to keep multiple conversations between two end points separate. You may have heard the term well-known port-numbers before. That term refers to port numbers that are often-used and static in that they use the same port numbers every time. You'll be expected to know common well-known port numbers to pass your Intro exam, such as 23 for Telnet and 21 for FTP.

That's about all there is to Layer 5, the Session Layer. From here on out, there's more you need to know about each layer, and that starts with Layer 4 - the Transport Layer. We'll take a look at that layer in Part II of this OSI tutorial.

International Association of Coaching Certification - The Process

Certification is an important step to being recognized as a professional in the life coaching profession. Potential clients may screen coaches by making sure that they are certified, while your peers recognize certification as demonstration of your professional commitment.

The International Association of Coaching (IAC) certification process for members includes three steps. First, you take the sample exam for free. This exam is based on the coaching masteries, which can be downloaded for free on the IAC website. When you are comfortable that you can pass the written exam, you pay a fee (currently $35.00) to take the Certification Part One Written Examination. A passing score on this examination qualifies you to take the Certification Part Two Evaluation. This involves submitting two recorded coaching sessions that will be evaluated to ensure you have adequately mastered the practical application of the coaching masteries. The fee to review the tapes is currently $350. If you do not pass on the first review there is a fee of $175 for each additional recording you submit for review. Yikes!

You spend so much time studying and practicing before submitting your certification tapes to an organization like the International Association of Coaching (IAC). You've probably taken a professional coaching course and you want to maximize your chances of getting certified the first time you try. And while the IAC provides extensive study material to help you prepare, it sure would be nice to have some warning about common mistakes so you could listen for them as you are selecting your tapes for consideration.

And here's the good news-In a recent article, Barbra Sundquist, IAC certifier, lists the top five errors she hears on tapes she reviews. They are:

Talking too much and not allowing enough silence for the client to process and come to new insights,

Rushing to solve the client's problem without a full exploration of the agenda,

Accepting what the client says at face value,

Holding back the coach's insights or failing to challenge the client out of a desire to be polite,

And telling the client want to do instead of allowing the client to discover the answer by using appropriate questions.

As you review the tapes you plan to submit for certification, consider each of these points. Put yourself in the place of the certifier and try to score the tapes yourself. Do you feel you have a passing tape with a comfortable margin of error? If you do a careful evaluation of the tapes you submit prior to submission and wait until you have really demonstrated the Masteries on your evaluation tapes, you will maximize your change of being certified on the first try. The Pain of the SBA 8(a) Certification Process is Worth Your Effort

In 2005, I decided to expand my company into the "big contracting arena". After researching, I determined the SBA 8(a) status was critical to my company's future success. Here are tips to help you successfully apply for and receive SBA Certification on your own. FYI... The government does not charge you to apply for this program. So what's keeping you from starting today?

Let me repeat... You don't have to pay an "expert" to fill out this basic government application form. When I started this process, I was somewhat intimidated. by the SBA website. However, being a small business owner I did not have a lot of cash on-hand to pay someone else to fill out a form for me.

AND.... just think about this other aspect... you will be submitting your most personal information in this process. I can only imagine that companies you pay to submit this form for you maybe hiring low-wage people who are not bonded or even are outsourced in a third world country to fill out your form. Would you open your tax records or financial records open to complete strangers? I won't. Save your dollars, save your privacy, complete your application on your own, do it yourself!

Also, knowing that government agencies are moving into a paperless mode, it did not make sense to download and submit the paperwork in hard copy. This adds weeks to the application process. Take the time, do it online. I made the commitment to myself that I would not rush the process but complete the application in chunks, taking it one step at a time, so it would be accurate and get through the screening process, the first time.

The online application is very straight forward and will cost you nothing to apply for. You can start / stop the application process at anytime to gather required documents or company references. While you can take your time in the application process, I would recommend you set a goal to get it completed in a week. I was very diligent and got mine done in a couple days.

Is there pain in the process? YES. This form will delve into the most personal aspects of your business ... business references, income tax returns, personal credibility and finances. So be prepared for the pain! But keep focused on the goal you have set...to gain SBA 8(a) status for your company.

Upon submitting the application, you may receive an email from the SBA stating you need to provide additional information. If you are a caucasian woman like me, you may be asked to write a Social Disadvantaged Narrative. The bad news is...they don't really give you much information or advice on this document. The good news is ...that I was again able to write the narrative on my own (and not pay someone else $1000- $5000 to write my own story) and so can you.

What is the Social Disadvantage Narrative?

This is a story about your life, in your own words, that describes how your life circumstances caused you to have to struggle.

The SBA defines social disadvantage as:

"Socially disadvantaged individuals are those who have been subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice or cultural bias because of their identity as members of a group. Social disadvantage must stem from circumstances beyond their control.

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, individuals who are members of the following designated groups are presumed to be socially disadvantaged:

o Black Americans

o Hispanic Americans

o Native Americans (American Indians, Eskimos, Aleuts, and Native Hawaiians)

o Asian Pacific Americans

o Members of other groups designated by the SBA."

Author's note: Members of other groups includes Caucasian women.

When reading about evidence of social disadvantage, it is important to keep in mind this quote... "However, an individual's statement of personal experiences in combination with the generalized evidence may be sufficient to demonstrate social disadvantage." This is why you SHOULD NOT HIRE SOMEONE ELSE to write YOUR story.

What does the narrative include?

There are three areas the SBA wants to see evidence of discrimination: education, employment and business work history. You can put together a compelling argument, just like I did, by focusing on four areas in your life. They are:

o Family Background / Influence: Describe the influence your family exerted on your career decisions. What were you expected to do with your life / career? What types of careers did your parents, siblings, grandparents or extended family members pursue? How did this differ from what you wanted to achieve later in life?

o Educational Background / Opportunities: Educational experiences directly influence your ability to make career choices. Describe your educational background. Do you have a college degree? How long did it take you to complete your education?

o Career Experience / Earning capacity: Career experiences directly influence your earning capacity and overall quality of life. Can you give an example of when you were subjected to harassment in your work environment that had a dramatic negative affect on your overall job performance?

o Business Work History / Your experience as a small business owner and potential jobs you were not able to bid on or receive.

Be prepared to live through buried personal pain

If you are like me, deciding to become an entrepreneur was a decision that evolved from your life experiences. Perhaps you worked for many years in companies and were not satisfied with the people you reported to or the salary you were paid. Your decision to start your own business was built upon opportunities that came your way or that you were denied.

As you start to go through the writing process, you may feel a full range of emotions erupt including: Anger, Fear, Frustration, Mental Pain, Anguish, Sorrow, Doubt

Why do I mention this? Because I experienced these emotions when I wrote my narrative and I want you to be prepared. Creating this document is like opening old wounds, remembering "bad stuff" and reliving events you really don't want to dwell on.

You have worked through these bad times to make a better life for yourself and your family. And it is so frustrating to recount times that you did not win, those times you were bypassed for promotions and this negativity dredges up anger and self-doubt. But it is only temporary pain and think of it as a positive reinforcement that you made the right choice to start your own business.

With that said.... Here is another tip... While you do need to set a time limit on getting this document prepared, give yourself a break and write on it until you start to feel too emotional. Stop and come back later to continue writing. Keep the tissues nearby and decide that when you complete this task you have earned a little personal reward for your efforts.

Two Key Points

Here are the two key points to remember as you prepare the narrative:

1. Think of this as a writing exercise: Plan on spending at least 3-4 hours writing, editing and preparing the final narrative. Keep it in perspective, this is just a paper, don't stress!

2. Put on your Whiner Cap: This is the one time that it is OK to be a whiner. You have permission to whine and write about all of the people and events that "did you wrong".

And finally.... be sure to add some quotes to your narrative to support your claims. I used eight quotes in my seven page narrative. The best way to locate quotes is to do a Google search on key words that you want to emphasize in your narrative. For example I used the following descriptors: women salaries, women education, Texas women careers

In Summary

Getting certified as an SBA 8(a) firm is worth the pain. Remember that... You do not have to hire someone to apply for SBA 8(a) status or write your Social Disadvantage Narrative. You've found a product. You think it's good. But you're just not sure. What will tip you over the edge to make that purchase decision?

For many people it's reviews on consumer protection websites. These are sites that warn you to stay away from certain products while reviewing and recommending others.

The problem is that many of these consumer protection websites are set up by the owners of the products themselves. In fact some consumer protection companies in the past have gone so far as to set themselves up as a 501(3)(C) organization with nonprofit status in order to lend even more credibility to their recommendations.

And don't be bamboozled by website names. Just because a site has "authority" or "official" or even "government" in it's name doesn't mean it's a credible site. Anybody can buy a domain name with these words in it. You'll probably recognize this as a offshoot of the old direct mail trick of sending mailings in official looking envelopes. Anyone who's ever opened up one of those mailings and become instantly annoyed will know what I mean.

The worst part is that fake consumer protection sites are probably found most often by people searching for work at home jobs or work at home businesses. And often these people are desperate to find work and make quick decisions without regard to logic.

Legitimate consumer protection sites can be broken down into several categories. The following are just a few of these categories.

The first consumer protection sites are ones run by the government. Any site ending with ".gov" is a legitimate U.S. government site. Many sites ending with .us are state or local U.S. government sites. But don't always count on it because it is possible for individuals and companies to register .us domains. However, it's usually pretty easy to figure out if a .us site is a legitimate government site or not.

Then there are well know consumer protection sites such as BBB.org, Fraud.org, of course ConsumerReports.org are sites that have proven themselves to be reliable over time. However you still need to use these sites in conjunction with other resources. For example, just because the BBB lists multiple complaints against a company doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad company. You still need to know the volume of business the company does since obviously 100 complaints against a company that does 500 transactions per year is much different than 100 complaints against a company that does 500,000 transactions per year.

One other thing you should know about well known, legitimate consumer protection sites is that sometimes websites will hijack their logo and place it on their website to make their own site look more credible. In other words, they are using an unapproved logo on their website. There are two extra steps you should take when you see a consumer protection organization's logo on a website. One, you should click on the logo as most legitimate consumer protection logos are clickable and will take you to the members directory. If the logo isn't clickable you should see if there's a members directory on the consumer protection website and try to locate the website in the members directory.

A trickier area is affiliate review sites which generate their profits by generating commissions from products sold via their reviews. The paradox is that some of the best reviews of products are found at affiliate review sites that have a loyal following because many affiliate review websites have built up a loyal following and they aren't willing to make a bad recommendation to make a buck and lose their audience. To evaluate the reliability of an affiliate review site don't just look at the products they do and don't recommend. You should also look at what negative comments they make about the products that they do recommend and whether they identify for whom the product may be a good fit and for whom it may not be a suitable fit. Certainly there is no perfect product and there is also no perfect product for everyone, so if a reviewer claims to have found a perfect product, be very wary of the recommendation.

There are certainly other categories of consumer protection websites and other tricks that the bad guys play to make you believe that their legitimate. But hopefully this information will help you navigate the often tricky waters of product reviews and consumer protection websites.

True to the reputation as a leading certification organization, the ACSM certification exam is a tough one. They will try and slip you up with the dreaded "pick the best answer" from a bunch of correct answers. ACSM is one of the more costly study-at-home certifications. It can run about $700-$900 when all is said and done. A lot? I guess. Are you doing this for one year, or on a whim? Then it would be costly, wouldn't it? If it's the start of your career, think of it as a lot cheaper than spending $85,000 on an Exercise Science degree.

Continuing Education Credits

ACSM also has continuing education credits to keep you good and current with their programs. (and to get more money out of you, of course!)

Luckily, ACSM's validity period is three years, instead of two, like with ACE. (It use to be four years...)

An ACSM Certified Personal Trainer needs 45 credits for recertification and must pay a $30 fee.

That's pretty steep in terms of CEC time, about 7-8 days worth of work in three years. Other certifications are less, however that doesn't necessarily make ACSM bad or the others better.

ACSM let's you earn CEC's through participation in a whole bunch of ACSM workshops and classes. Here are a few:

1. The candidate accumulates the required number of Continuing Education Credits (CEC's) and/or the equivalent.

3. The candidate pays the required recertification fee.

Summary

ACSM has many more 'cool' certifications than those above to let you go beyond just being a ACSM Personal Trainer. So if you're interested in advancing your career with more education, ACSM has the ability to advance with you!

The highest qualification on offer by the NCRA is the RDR certification (Registered Diplomate Reporter). This qualification can only be attempted by RMR certified reporters. This certification is gained after taking a written test to evaluate the applicant's knowledge.

It is important to take the practice tests so you will know what your strengths and challenges are. As you take the practice tests I would recommend that you follow the steps below:

Learn what is under the menu options and shortcuts (on the test, you may have to click the down arrow to show all of the options, so it is important to know what options are under what menu title; it may ask you to complete a task with ONLY using shortcuts)

Be honest with yourself. If you are not ready to take it then don't. You will get a better sense of your skills if you are honest and know what you need to work on before you sit down to test. Below you will find some tips to remember as you take the test:

Remember it is a solution not a question

It is a test of procedures that provide a result (there are many ways to get the answer, but the test is designed to get you to follow a procedure to obtain the desired result; the procedure taken is more important than the actual result

The answer is in the solution (look for the words that relate to a menu option; it's more of a procedure that provides an answer)

Read the solution twice before starting (first read it to get an understanding of what the question is asking; the second time read for clues that may lead you to the answer)

Read it again before hitting next to make sure you have done all that the problem asked you to do (always double check your solution to make sure you have done EXACTLY what they were asking; before hitting next, check your spelling against what is written)

It is also a test of how you well follow instructions (remember that they take off for incorrect spelling; remember to type the words exactly as they have and to put them exactly where they want them)

Remember that you don't need a perfect score to pass (it is a good idea to be aware of your weaknesses before taking the test, so if there is a solution on the test that you don't know how to do, skip it and go to one that you know; it is a timed test and if you fail, remember what you missed, because the next test will have more of those solutions than the first time)

Remember the tests are more than about guessing the right answer (A, B, C, D); it is about whether you can DO THE WORK. Remember when your certificate comes that your scores are not listed, so no one will know what they are. The certificates show that you are a professional that can handle most operations in the Office Product Line that you tested in. They tell an employer if you can maneuver around the product and get the request done.

Microsoft Certification: The New MCTS Tracks And Exams

Microsoft is revamping its certification tracks, and will eventually retire the familiar MCSE certificatons. The new certification setup is much like Cisco's, where there are specialist certifications to go along with the more general CCNA, then mid-level certifications such as the CCNP, and then a more-advanced practical exam modeled somewhat after the coveted CCIE certification.

Microsoft's new specialist exams are the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) exams. As of March 2006, there were five separate MCTS Tracks. Three of them deal with .NET Framework 2.0; these are the Web Application, Windows Applications, and Distributed Applications certifications. Each of these separate certifications requires the candidate to pass two exams. There is also a one-exam SQL Server 2005 certification, as well as a BizTalk Server 2006 single-exam certification.

The initial question is "Why is Microsoft doing this?" According to their website, MS feels that IT hiring managers today have a tough time deciding which computer certifications best identify job candidates who best meet their needs. I know it's easy to take verbal shots at Microsoft (it'll be an Olympic sport one day), but this new series of certs does have appeal for hiring managers, which can only help qualified candidates. Instead of the more-general MCSE, which does still suffer from the overcertification of NT 4.0 MCSEs back in the day, these more-specific certifications will make it easier for the job candidate to prove that they can do the job - and easier for the hiring manager to make an informed decision.

Microsoft hasn't announced the track that will eventually replace the MCSE, but this track will be revealed with the next client-server Windows release. ITIL V3 Intermediate Certification - Examination-Taking Tips

The ITIL V3 Intermediate courses and certification examinations are newly launched in most countries. The examination requires the candidate to answer Eight (8) multiple choice questions. Sounds easy but it is NOT. The questions are scenario based. You have to read about a page of text to understand the scenario, then read the four possible answers each consisting of a paragraph of text.

The questions are gradient scored. Gradient scored means each question will have 4 possible answer options, one of which is worth 5 marks (best answer), one which is worth 3 marks (second best), one which is worth 1 mark (not so good), and one which is a distracter and achieves no marks. To pass, you need to score at least 28 marks, i.e you cannot afford to lose more than 12 marks. This means you need to choose the best answer for at least 4 questions to have a good chance to pass.

Here are my personal experiences and tips.

Tip #1: Time is of the essence

Having to answer 8 questions in 90 minutes, you have only approximately 11 minutes per question. There is a lot to read - 1 page scenario and 4 possible answers (1 paragraph per answer). Don't spend too much time on a single question, especially the first one. If you feel you are struggling with a particular question, SKIP it first and come back to it later if you have time at the end. You can still pass the examination if you have answered the remaining 7 questions well.

Tip #2: Eliminate the obvious wrong answers and focus your time on the best 2 answers shortlisted.

There will be a distractor answer and it is often easy to pick this out at first glance. I also used a process of elimination to further narrow down the answers to the final 2 or final one.

Tip #3: Differentiating between the best and second best answers may require you to read the Question again and again.

Every mark count! 2 marks between the best and next best may be all it takes to pass or fail your overall examination. Spend time to analyze the Question & Answers after you have narrowed your answers to the final 2. Underline Keywords and "score" the answer using a series of + and -, like you are grading your own work. Often, you will find the best answer is the one with the all pluses and no minuses, which leads me to the next Tip.

Tip #4: Generic vs Specific Answers - Read the question and understand what the question is seeking to test you.

Sometimes, the generic answer containing all the right ITIL statements may seems like the best answer BUT if the question asked for "your recommendation," "what specific actions would you take," then the Generic answer may not be the best answer. You should look for the Answer that is more specifically related to the case study or scenario.

Tip#5: Sign up for a course with a credible, authorized ITIL training center. Prepare yourself using the sample examination papers available.

Study the materials and make full use of the classroom session to understand ITIL concepts and how they are applied. As this is case study and scenario-based examination, plain memory work will not be enough. A good ITIL training center should provide tips and exercises to prepare you well for the certification examination.

Microsoft Vista Certification Exams Announced

Microsoft Vista certification is on the way, and Microsoft recently announced the first Vista exams. In keeping with trends in certification, these particular exams are designed for different job roles. These exams are scheduled to be released in "early 2007", according to Microsoft's website:

MCITP - Microsoft Certified IT Professional - "Consumer Support Technician" and "Enterprise Support Technician" certifications

MCTS - Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist - "Windows Vista, Configuration"

Unfortunately, there are no blueprints or details available right now detailing the differences between the Consumer Support and Enterprise Support certifications.

Those of you who were around when MS went to Server 2000 may remember that MS announced what some considered a hasty end to the NT 4.0 certification. This time around, Microsoft's website makes a point of saying that "although progressive organizations will adopt Windows Vista immediately, Windows XP will continue to be a driving force in IT for years to come". MS hasn't announced any further information how Vista will affect XP or Server certifications, but I suspect they won't be quite as fast to stop supporting earlier certifications.

Microsoft does make some recommendations to candidates currently working on their MCDST certification. If you're working on that cert, visit the Microsoft Learning website to read more.

Even if your organization is happy with their current network operating system, you should still be making long-term plans to get certified in Microsoft Vista. The Best WLAN Book, CWNA the Inside Scoop

Having taught a variety of IT classes and being a learner as I moved along, I have read and evaluated certification books from Cisco, Microsoft, CompTIA,and EC-Council. Although not part of my job description I was always given the task of evaluating books. At one school I was the resident bookworm. I remember receiving the first PDF from Planet 3 and working to convince my boss, the school owner, to look seriously at the CWNA track. Ever since, I have been through these books over and over. The CWNA text from the 1st edition to the 3rd edition still hold an enviable place in my library. There are books that are excellent, yet very hard on the eyes and brain. This new text written by Mr. David Coleman and David Westcott has surpassed the standard set by these previous editions.

The question of authority in the book writing world has been blurred as far as I am concerned. Book writing has become a free for all profession. There are books being written on pace with tabloids, exaggerations, false claims and all. Something like a bookarazzi. However one can rest assured that Mr. Coleman and Westcott are fully authorized to write a book on WLANs. Though I don't think we have met, I have followed his writings for a long time. In my pursuit of CWNA and CWSP certification I hung on every word written by "Mr. Multipath" as he is affectionately known in the wifi world. Mr.Coleman is and has been a trainer/ consultant for the CWNP Program from the very beginning. His company Airspy Networks specializes in government classes and he travels the world dispensing knowledge. Mr. Westcott is also a seasoned "brainiac" fully versed in wifi technology. One can be comfortable in accepting the accuracy and relevance of the information provided.

Whenever I am called upon to evaluate a text I remove myself from instructor mode and allow my student person to come forward. In reading the CWNA text I quickly appreciated the appearance. The picture chosen for the cover is soothing, setting a tone of comfort, almost presenting itself as a book of relaxation. The feel of the book is not intimidating, what grabbed my approval was the fact that the book felt readable unlike some books that immediately triggered a response of " oh lord". I remember one school attempting to teach "An Introduction to WLAN" and for whatever reason chose The Definitive Guide to 802.11 Wireless Networks. You may well imagine the response from the learners. This text has that learner enticing appeal.

Next I looked at the general layout of the text. Definitely a positive for the reader is the placement of the CWNA objectives at the very start of the book. I remember directing previous students to the website to go through the objectives. Mr. Coleman and Westcott scored a big touchdown by introducing the book with the detailed objectives. In a previous article "How To Pass Your CWNA on Your First Try" I stressed the need for owning the objectives. This is an irreplaceable study map. In this edition of the book it is right there.

Contents and relevance are a huge indicator of a well written book. The CWNA third edition book for the PW0-100 exam carried thirteen chapters. Mr. Coleman reflects the huge advancements in WLAN technology by increasing the contents of the PW0-104 study guide to eighteen chapters. In comparing, one would observe the new subject areas High Throughput (HT) which covers 802.11n, Cooperative Control, advancements in the UNII band, new innovations in site surveying, Quality of Service(QoS), Spatial Multiplexing and Beamforming. This is extremely commendable considering the rapid changes in WLANs. In terms of relevance, I think this book is not only suited to the potential test taker but should be a must read for any professional in a networking environment. The diagrams and illustrations are truly there for learning and are not decorative. They are pertinent, up to date and informative. I am highly impressed with the chapter on RF Math and Spread Spectrum Technologies. The examples are well explained,attesting to the fact that what we have here is a truly student oriented text.

An authors choice of language can definitely be a positive or a negative. I've read books where the terminology used was irrelevant, confusing, almost mechanical. The flow of information in this text is almost automatic because of the author's style. The student/reader will gain immensely in terms of developing that language of commonality needed to explain concepts to the non IT person or converse with the trained IT professional. Certification Book Studying - Tips to Stay Motivated

You will buy yourself a certification book or two, no doubt to study - as most of us do. And you already know they are so chunky it tries the patience of even the most enthusiastic person at times to get through all the material. How do you stay enthusiastic and motivated to keep at the timeframe you set for yourself to finally get your cert? We do want it as soon as possible, don't we? Having that certification in our hands is the trophy of the hard work we have put in. But having it also means we can now stop studying and enjoy other things!

Recognize reality

Some cert books are easier read than others. Those MS press books are notorious for putting you to sleep but they do contain excellent information (well most of them, sometimes MS press doesn't get it right). Recognize your level of knowledge and how difficult or easy studying for a particular subject will be. When something is harder to study, follow the tips given below more often. Don't feel like you have to just keep reading the certification book if nothing is sinking in.

Don't stop studying - just take a break

When I'm studying for a new certification I set a timeframe for myself when I want to finish it by. Usually 2-3 months of studying (depending of course on the cert and what time I have). I want to finish as soon as possible because I don't want to have it in the back of my mind. After going home from work, the last thing I really want to do is to study. And most professionals are on a tight time frame.

We have 2-3 hours a night to devote to our studies so make all those hours count. Read your book but when you feel your mind wondering, switch to another form of study. Go to youtube.com and watch what you have been studying. That way you are still allowing the information to sip in. Your mind will welcome the change and your motivation will stay with you. Then go hit the books again.

Read, take notes. Read, take notes

Become active in your reading. When we jot notes down, we tend to remember the material better. Write out full long hand notes or even points in bullet form. Mark things with pencil on the certification book even. Do something different so the material you are reading can stick in your mind.

Do hands-on labs

If the material allows it, do some physical work. Either lab work or even simulators on your computer. Learning something and then doing it, is the best form of studying.

Have fun with practice exams

Practice exams, to me, are like games. I love them because not only are they fun but a vital studying aid. They help reinforce the material in your mind. They help see the areas you are weak in. The questions that give you a scenario and ask you to find the solution help you see just how the material you are reading can get applied in a real world solution. Yeap they are great.

Switch books or information

No one source is good to pass your exam. Most professionals combine 2-3 study aids. You may buy two books or a certification book and a CBT or go to a training school but also buy a book, etc. When you get bored with one book or other study aid, then switch. Or even go to the web and see how the information is worded differently (wikipedia.org is great). Getting a new slant on the information helps a great deal in keeping you motivated to progress through the material.

When your company is thinking about Going Green, it may be good to think forward about how a decision to seek a Green certification will affect your business. The kind of "Easy Green" now promoted to this Green-driven market brings short-term gain with long term worries. No decision to create an environmentally-friendly business format should compromise the integrity of the company's future. This is a decision worthy of better thought.

Take, for example, the near certainty that some investigative reporter is sure to look into the growing number of website certifications that require only a few hundred dollars of payment and a self-assessment form. The lack of any integrity factors for these kinds of certifications seem to invite abuses. In other words, a less-than-honest firm can earn the same certification as a environmentally-committed company. This glaring invitation for abuse will certainly come back to haunt companies who took the easy route to a world stressing problem. Only a fool could think that these easy-to-cheat systems will become a bastion of integrity.

It has been properly said:"If we cannot measure something, we cannot verify it." The obvious purpose of a Green certification logo is to provide the public with some assurance that the logo means something more than that the applicant paid a fee and filled in a form. These programs promote a fundamental deception because the certification has been designed to convey public confidence in something that has not been verified or even reviewed by an independent professional.

Just ask yourself how you would feel after deciding to do business with another firm that boasts of its Green merit to win your business,and you subsequently discover that any firm with a few hundred dollars could buy the same designation. Would you feel deceived and cheated? This will be the ugly fate of more than a few companies that take the "Easy Green" route of short-circuiting the system rather than making a realistic commitment.

The whole concept of greenwashing has been artificially kept alive because of a business belief that marketing is the bending of perceptions to boost marketshare and profits. Advertising has always provided the latitude to turn negatives into positives, words into realities, and minimums into maximums. So, what happens when the allowances of marketing run into the demands of integrity? In the case of environmentalism, the mongoloid child is called greenwashing.

If the only way to verify Green compliance is by measuring or testing, then the obvious antidote to greenwashing is an audit by a professional who uses an industry standard of compliance, The Green Business League made a commitment years ago to train certifiers (auditors) and provide a standard for a Green business that requires more than good intentions or a token effort. This standard has been recently affirmed in an executive order by President Obama requiring a sustainability officer who is required to project a variety of Green and sustainable practices for their agency or company. Let us return to the original question. What would be the investigative reporters criticism to find that your company (out of many other Easy Green companies) installed a series of Green practices that had been audited by an independent professional and found to merit a national certification? You would probably feel pretty good about being the one that stood out as the authentically Green business.

Audits prove that you keep honest books. Audits prevent cheating by manufacturers. Audits of inventory stop thievery. No one really wants an audit unless they know that the audit will prove the quality of the work done. Those who desire to cheat the system resist audits. One of the failures of Copenhagen was China's willingness to sign on to all the mandates of the Climate Control Summit as long as China did not have to submit to an audit of the results. What message does that revelation convey to you in clear message. China has no intention to live up to the mandates, although they will put on a show that they are concerned about the environment. This is a classic example of Green washing.

Companies everywhere should make the commitment to reject Greenwashing by insisting on Green certification earned by Green practices certified by an independent audit. Accepting any Green claim at face value is as foolish as inviting the unscrupulous of the world to pay you in Monopoly money. Why not play golf with someone who feels that adjusting his score is a good way to impress his friends. If it is not measured, it cannot be verified; and if there is no audit of Green practices there can be no certification of a Green business... unless you bought it off the Internet!

Why have you been putting off getting SBA 8a certification? It is NOT that difficult to get certified if you really want to break into government contracting. And you do NOT have to pay someone else to help you fill out the form. If you can read and follow instructions, you can do it. How do I know? I successfully completed my company SBA 8a certification in 2004. Here's the blueprint... now get it done!

Where do you start?

There is an electronic application form at the SBA website. If you take the time to read the four steps to the Electronic Application Process, you will be prepared to complete it in the least amount of time with the least amount of personal pain. I recommend submitting the electronic application form over the mail-in version because you will receive your results back in days, NOT weeks.

Step One: Get registered with CCR

The first step is to get your company registered at the federal Central Contractor Registration (CCR) database The CCR database is a single point of vendor registration and is key to streamlining the procurement process. Note: It might take 24 - 72 hours to get your CCR profile active in the system. Then you can proceed.

Step Two: Register in the SBA General Login System (GLS)

This system supports all services offered by the SBA. Two key pieces of information you will need to know are your Employer Identification Number (EIN) or your Social Security Number. You will also need to register for a Dun & Bradstreet number (DUNS). The DUNS is a requirement for all federal contracts as well as many major corporations. Note: You can register for the FREE service and do not have to sign up for any other monthly fee-based D&B services.

Step Three: Download, sign, get notarized and mail-in Signature Authorization card

This is the only "manual" portion of the process. It becomes the trigger for the SBA to begin screening and reviewing your Electronic application. Be sure you send your Signature Authorization card to the appropriate SBA Program Certification & Eligibility address, based upon the state you are doing business.

Step Four: Begin SBA 8a Application Process via the GLS

Using your new GLS user name / password - enter your information into the application online. Note: You do not have to complete the application in one sitting, fill out as much as you can and then save and come back later. How long will it take to complete the application? The more complex the company structure, the longer it takes to fill out the information. For example:a 100% owned sole-proprietorship owned will not take as long as a multi-owner corporation located in a community property state. Note: My application took about two hours total to complete. You will need your tax returns from the past three years and other documents for reference.

The SBA does offer FAQs and an online training course to get you prepared for the application process. Once you have submitted the application, by law, there is a 90 day response time on getting back to you. My application was reviewed in less than 30 days. So if you submit the application online, you will get a much more timely response.

One other note: Caucasian women have more difficulty in getting SBA 8a certified. One extra support document you may be asked to prepare and submit is a disadvantaged social narrative.
