The Pain of the SBA 8(a) Certification Process is Worth Your Effort

In 2005, I decided to expand my company into the "big contracting arena". After researching, I determined the SBA 8(a) status was critical to my company's future success. Here are tips to help you successfully apply for and receive SBA Certification on your own. FYI... The government does not charge you to apply for this program. So what's keeping you from starting today?

Let me repeat... You don't have to pay an "expert" to fill out this basic government application form. When I started this process, I was somewhat intimidated. by the SBA website. However, being a small business owner I did not have a lot of cash on-hand to pay someone else to fill out a form for me.

AND.... just think about this other aspect... you will be submitting your most personal information in this process. I can only imagine that companies you pay to submit this form for you maybe hiring low-wage people who are not bonded or even are outsourced in a third world country to fill out your form. Would you open your tax records or financial records open to complete strangers? I won't. Save your dollars, save your privacy, complete your application on your own, do it yourself!

Also, knowing that government agencies are moving into a paperless mode, it did not make sense to download and submit the paperwork in hard copy. This adds weeks to the application process. Take the time, do it online. I made the commitment to myself that I would not rush the process but complete the application in chunks, taking it one step at a time, so it would be accurate and get through the screening process, the first time.

The online application is very straight forward and will cost you nothing to apply for. You can start / stop the application process at anytime to gather required documents or company references. While you can take your time in the application process, I would recommend you set a goal to get it completed in a week. I was very diligent and got mine done in a couple days.

Is there pain in the process? YES. This form will delve into the most personal aspects of your business ... business references, income tax returns, personal credibility and finances. So be prepared for the pain! But keep focused on the goal you have set...to gain SBA 8(a) status for your company.

Upon submitting the application, you may receive an email from the SBA stating you need to provide additional information. If you are a caucasian woman like me, you may be asked to write a Social Disadvantaged Narrative. The bad news is...they don't really give you much information or advice on this document. The good news is ...that I was again able to write the narrative on my own (and not pay someone else $1000- $5000 to write my own story) and so can you.

What is the Social Disadvantage Narrative?

This is a story about your life, in your own words, that describes how your life circumstances caused you to have to struggle.

The SBA defines social disadvantage as:

"Socially disadvantaged individuals are those who have been subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice or cultural bias because of their identity as members of a group. Social disadvantage must stem from circumstances beyond their control.

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, individuals who are members of the following designated groups are presumed to be socially disadvantaged:

o Black Americans

o Hispanic Americans

o Native Americans (American Indians, Eskimos, Aleuts, and Native Hawaiians)

o Asian Pacific Americans

o Members of other groups designated by the SBA."

Author's note: Members of other groups includes Caucasian women.

When reading about evidence of social disadvantage, it is important to keep in mind this quote... "However, an individual's statement of personal experiences in combination with the generalized evidence may be sufficient to demonstrate social disadvantage." This is why you SHOULD NOT HIRE SOMEONE ELSE to write YOUR story.

What does the narrative include?

There are three areas the SBA wants to see evidence of discrimination: education, employment and business work history. You can put together a compelling argument, just like I did, by focusing on four areas in your life. They are:

o Family Background / Influence: Describe the influence your family exerted on your career decisions. What were you expected to do with your life / career? What types of careers did your parents, siblings, grandparents or extended family members pursue? How did this differ from what you wanted to achieve later in life?

o Educational Background / Opportunities: Educational experiences directly influence your ability to make career choices. Describe your educational background. Do you have a college degree? How long did it take you to complete your education?

o Career Experience / Earning capacity: Career experiences directly influence your earning capacity and overall quality of life. Can you give an example of when you were subjected to harassment in your work environment that had a dramatic negative affect on your overall job performance?

o Business Work History / Your experience as a small business owner and potential jobs you were not able to bid on or receive.

Be prepared to live through buried personal pain

If you are like me, deciding to become an entrepreneur was a decision that evolved from your life experiences. Perhaps you worked for many years in companies and were not satisfied with the people you reported to or the salary you were paid. Your decision to start your own business was built upon opportunities that came your way or that you were denied.

As you start to go through the writing process, you may feel a full range of emotions erupt including: Anger, Fear, Frustration, Mental Pain, Anguish, Sorrow, Doubt

Why do I mention this? Because I experienced these emotions when I wrote my narrative and I want you to be prepared. Creating this document is like opening old wounds, remembering "bad stuff" and reliving events you really don't want to dwell on.

You have worked through these bad times to make a better life for yourself and your family. And it is so frustrating to recount times that you did not win, those times you were bypassed for promotions and this negativity dredges up anger and self-doubt. But it is only temporary pain and think of it as a positive reinforcement that you made the right choice to start your own business.

With that said.... Here is another tip... While you do need to set a time limit on getting this document prepared, give yourself a break and write on it until you start to feel too emotional. Stop and come back later to continue writing. Keep the tissues nearby and decide that when you complete this task you have earned a little personal reward for your efforts.

Two Key Points

Here are the two key points to remember as you prepare the narrative:

1. Think of this as a writing exercise: Plan on spending at least 3-4 hours writing, editing and preparing the final narrative. Keep it in perspective, this is just a paper, don't stress!

2. Put on your Whiner Cap: This is the one time that it is OK to be a whiner. You have permission to whine and write about all of the people and events that "did you wrong".

And finally.... be sure to add some quotes to your narrative to support your claims. I used eight quotes in my seven page narrative. The best way to locate quotes is to do a Google search on key words that you want to emphasize in your narrative. For example I used the following descriptors: women salaries, women education, Texas women careers

Getting certified as an SBA 8(a) firm is worth the pain. Remember that... You do not have to hire someone to apply for SBA 8(a) status or write your Social Disadvantage Narrative. Beware of Fake Consumer Protection Websites

You've found a product. You think it's good. But you're just not sure. What will tip you over the edge to make that purchase decision?

For many people it's reviews on consumer protection websites. These are sites that warn you to stay away from certain products while reviewing and recommending others.

The problem is that many of these consumer protection websites are set up by the owners of the products themselves. In fact some consumer protection companies in the past have gone so far as to set themselves up as a 501(3)(C) organization with nonprofit status in order to lend even more credibility to their recommendations.

And don't be bamboozled by website names. Just because a site has "authority" or "official" or even "government" in it's name doesn't mean it's a credible site. Anybody can buy a domain name with these words in it. You'll probably recognize this as a offshoot of the old direct mail trick of sending mailings in official looking envelopes. Anyone who's ever opened up one of those mailings and become instantly annoyed will know what I mean.

The worst part is that fake consumer protection sites are probably found most often by people searching for work at home jobs or work at home businesses. And often these people are desperate to find work and make quick decisions without regard to logic.

Legitimate consumer protection sites can be broken down into several categories. The following are just a few of these categories.

The first consumer protection sites are ones run by the government. Any site ending with ".gov" is a legitimate U.S. government site. Many sites ending with .us are state or local U.S. government sites. But don't always count on it because it is possible for individuals and companies to register .us domains. However, it's usually pretty easy to figure out if a .us site is a legitimate government site or not.

Then there are well know consumer protection sites such as BBB.org, Fraud.org, of course ConsumerReports.org are sites that have proven themselves to be reliable over time. However you still need to use these sites in conjunction with other resources. For example, just because the BBB lists multiple complaints against a company doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad company. You still need to know the volume of business the company does since obviously 100 complaints against a company that does 500 transactions per year is much different than 100 complaints against a company that does 500,000 transactions per year.

One other thing you should know about well known, legitimate consumer protection sites is that sometimes websites will hijack their logo and place it on their website to make their own site look more credible. In other words, they are using an unapproved logo on their website. There are two extra steps you should take when you see a consumer protection organization's logo on a website. One, you should click on the logo as most legitimate consumer protection logos are clickable and will take you to the members directory. If the logo isn't clickable you should see if there's a members directory on the consumer protection website and try to locate the website in the members directory.

A trickier area is affiliate review sites which generate their profits by generating commissions from products sold via their reviews. The paradox is that some of the best reviews of products are found at affiliate review sites that have a loyal following because many affiliate review websites have built up a loyal following and they aren't willing to make a bad recommendation to make a buck and lose their audience. To evaluate the reliability of an affiliate review site don't just look at the products they do and don't recommend. You should also look at what negative comments they make about the products that they do recommend and whether they identify for whom the product may be a good fit and for whom it may not be a suitable fit. Certainly there is no perfect product and there is also no perfect product for everyone, so if a reviewer claims to have found a perfect product, be very wary of the recommendation.

There are certainly other categories of consumer protection websites and other tricks that the bad guys play to make you believe that their legitimate. But hopefully this information will help you navigate the often tricky waters of product reviews and consumer protection websites.

Train For Massage Therapy Certification

To practice massage therapy in most states requires certification from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB); many states also require certified massage therapists to be licensed. There are hundreds of good accredited massage therapy schools across the US and Canada that can train you to pass exams for certification.

When people talk about earning massage certificates and diplomas, they do not mean the same thing as gaining massage therapy certification. It is possible to get certificates after a number of hours of training in one specific area of massage, but still not be legally qualified to practice in many states. There are several very deliberate steps required before one can become a certified massage therapist (CMT), and almost every state has its own laws and regulations to follow.

The NCBTMB requires that candidates acquire a minimum number of 500 hours of training from an approved school (accredited by the US Department of Education or approved by the state of practice); required education must include 125 hours of body systems, anatomy, physiology and kinesiology; 200 hours of massage and bodywork assessment, theory and application; 40 hours of pathology; 10 hours of business and ethics, including at least 6 hours of ethics; and 125 hours of additional instruction. The candidate must then pass the NCBTMB exam to prove competency in practical skills (hands-on) as well as knowledge and understanding of professional massage practices.

Once the candidate has received NCBTMB certification, it is then important to secure a massage therapy license (if licensure is required in the state of practice). It is also essential to check with local authorities before setting up a practice to see if there are any other necessary prerequisites or regulations to be met. For instance, some states require CMTs to take periodic continuing education in massage practices. The administrators and instructors at the best schools are often a good resource to help students through this process.

In short, there are few professions that offer such great personal rewards as those of the natural healer; becoming a nationally certified massage therapist is one of the best ways to prove expertise in natural healing. If you would like to find the best training in your area, select a few

There is no doubt that there are plenty of career opportunities in the database field these days. Most subscribe to a private accrediting agency which can be troublesome if you want to use the credits/units earned at a vocational school and apply them to a traditional four-year college or university. These types of institutions can be very expensive, and being that the credit/units you have earned cannot be taken with you to another institution, in most cases, can be a disadvantage. Nevertheless, Vocational Schools can help you enhance your skill-set, just as with anything else, you get out of it what you put in. Vocational schools usually offer classes that are accommodating to people who work, the schedules are set and consistent through the program, the programs offered are often shorter than traditional junior colleges and they also provide job placement and help with filing for financial aid.

You can never go wrong with going to a traditional, regionally accredited Junior College, four-year College or University. People who usually circumvent the traditional route usually due so because of perceived or actual time constraints and the scheduling conflicts that may be involved. Traditional post-secondary schools offer the familiar coveted degrees: Associates, Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. etc., which hold their value indefinitely. Traditional schools are now more than ever tailoring their class schedules to accommodate working adults. However, trying to secure financial aid, figuring out a schedule, registering for classes can be quite daunting and time consuming.

If you have the time and can make the commitment then the traditional post-secondary school route is the safest and surest bet to accomplish your career goals. If you couple traditional school with a relevant industry certification then your marketability does go up considerably! Vocational schools may be a good alternative for those who are looking break into the job market right away in an entry-level position. With college, university or vocational schools chances are you will incur some student loans, well, to that I say, join the club! Look at it as a cost of opportunity. You'll probably get decent enough salary bump after finishing school to more than cover the cost of the student loan. When looking to land a job, remember that experience is key and if you go the certification route it is just to objectively demonstrate your abilities and get face time with an interviewer by standing out more than the next person. Also remember, that any of the three routes that you take a better than taking no route out all. Pick one and own it! Good luck!

ACSM is one of the more costly study-at-home certifications. It can run about $700-$900 when all is said and done. A lot? I guess. Are you doing this for one year, or on a whim? Continuing Education Credits

ACSM also has continuing education credits to keep you good and current with their programs. (and to get more money out of you, of course!)

Luckily, ACSM's validity period is three years, instead of two, like with ACE. (It use to be four years...)

An ACSM Certified Personal Trainer needs 45 credits for recertification and must pay a $30 fee.

That's pretty steep in terms of CEC time, about 7-8 days worth of work in three years. Other certifications are less, however that doesn't necessarily make ACSM bad or the others better.

ACSM let's you earn CEC's through participation in a whole bunch of ACSM workshops and classes. Here are a few:
