ITIL V3 Intermediate Certification - Examination-Taking Tips

The ITIL V3 Intermediate courses and certification examinations are newly launched in most countries. The examination requires the candidate to answer Eight (8) multiple choice questions. Sounds easy but it is NOT. The questions are scenario based. You have to read about a page of text to understand the scenario, then read the four possible answers each consisting of a paragraph of text.

The questions are gradient scored. Gradient scored means each question will have 4 possible answer options, one of which is worth 5 marks (best answer), one which is worth 3 marks (second best), one which is worth 1 mark (not so good), and one which is a distracter and achieves no marks. To pass, you need to score at least 28 marks, i.e you cannot afford to lose more than 12 marks. This means you need to choose the best answer for at least 4 questions to have a good chance to pass.

Here are my personal experiences and tips.

Tip #1: Time is of the essence

Having to answer 8 questions in 90 minutes, you have only approximately 11 minutes per question. There is a lot to read - 1 page scenario and 4 possible answers (1 paragraph per answer). Don't spend too much time on a single question, especially the first one. If you feel you are struggling with a particular question, SKIP it first and come back to it later if you have time at the end. You can still pass the examination if you have answered the remaining 7 questions well.  

Tip #2: Eliminate the obvious wrong answers and focus your time on the best 2 answers shortlisted.  

There will be a distractor answer and it is often easy to pick this out at first glance. I also used a process of elimination to further narrow down the answers to the final 2 or final one.  

Tip #3: Differentiating between the best and second best answers may require you to read the Question again and again.  

Every mark count! 2 marks between the best and next best may be all it takes to pass or fail your overall examination. Spend time to analyze the Question & Answers after you have narrowed your answers to the final 2. Underline Keywords and "score" the answer using a series of + and -, like you are grading your own work. Often, you will find the best answer is the one with the all pluses and no minuses, which leads me to the next Tip.  

Tip #4: Generic vs Specific Answers - Read the question and understand what the question is seeking to test you.  

Sometimes, the generic answer containing all the right ITIL statements may seems like the best answer BUT if the question asked for "your recommendation," "what specific actions would you take,"  then the Generic answer may not be the best answer. You should look for the Answer that is more specifically related to the case study or scenario. 

Tip#5: Sign up for a course with a credible, authorized ITIL training center. Prepare yourself using the sample examination papers available.  

Study the materials and make full use of the classroom session to understand ITIL concepts and how they are applied. As this is case study and scenario-based examination, plain memory work will not be enough. A good ITIL training center should provide tips and exercises to prepare you well for the certification examination.

Microsoft Vista Certification Exams Announced

Microsoft Vista certification is on the way, and Microsoft recently announced the first Vista exams. In keeping with trends in certification, these particular exams are designed for different job roles. These exams are scheduled to be released in "early 2007", according to Microsoft's website:

MCITP - Microsoft Certified IT Professional - "Consumer Support Technician" and "Enterprise Support Technician" certifications

MCTS - Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist - "Windows Vista, Configuration"

Unfortunately, there are no blueprints or details available right now detailing the differences between the Consumer Support and Enterprise Support certifications.

Those of you who were around when MS went to Server 2000 may remember that MS announced what some considered a hasty end to the NT 4.0 certification. This time around, Microsoft's website makes a point of saying that "although progressive organizations will adopt Windows Vista immediately, Windows XP will continue to be a driving force in IT for years to come". MS hasn't announced any further information how Vista will affect XP or Server certifications, but I suspect they won't be quite as fast to stop supporting earlier certifications.

Even if your organization is happy with their current network operating system, you should still be making long-term plans to get certified in Microsoft Vista. The Best WLAN Book, CWNA the Inside Scoop

Having taught a variety of IT classes and being a learner as I moved along, I have read and evaluated certification books from Cisco, Microsoft, CompTIA,and EC-Council. Although not part of my job description I was always given the task of evaluating books. At one school I was the resident bookworm. I remember receiving the first PDF from Planet 3 and working to convince my boss, the school owner, to look seriously at the CWNA track. Ever since, I have been through these books over and over. The CWNA text from the 1st edition to the 3rd edition still hold an enviable place in my library. There are books that are excellent, yet very hard on the eyes and brain. This new text written by Mr. David Coleman and David Westcott has surpassed the standard set by these previous editions.

The question of authority in the book writing world has been blurred as far as I am concerned. Book writing has become a free for all profession. There are books being written on pace with tabloids, exaggerations, false claims and all. Something like a bookarazzi. However one can rest assured that Mr. Coleman and Westcott are fully authorized to write a book on WLANs. Though I don't think we have met, I have followed his writings for a long time. In my pursuit of CWNA and CWSP certification I hung on every word written by "Mr. Multipath" as he is affectionately known in the wifi world. Mr.Coleman is and has been a trainer/ consultant for the CWNP Program from the very beginning. His company Airspy Networks specializes in government classes and he travels the world dispensing knowledge. Mr. Westcott is also a seasoned "brainiac" fully versed in wifi technology. One can be comfortable in accepting the accuracy and relevance of the information provided.

Whenever I am called upon to evaluate a text I remove myself from instructor mode and allow my student person to come forward. In reading the CWNA text I quickly appreciated the appearance. The picture chosen for the cover is soothing, setting a tone of comfort, almost presenting itself as a book of relaxation. The feel of the book is not intimidating, what grabbed my approval was the fact that the book felt readable unlike some books that immediately triggered a response of " oh lord". I remember one school attempting to teach "An Introduction to WLAN" and for whatever reason chose The Definitive Guide to 802.11 Wireless Networks. You may well imagine the response from the learners. This text has that learner enticing appeal.

Next I looked at the general layout of the text. Definitely a positive for the reader is the placement of the CWNA objectives at the very start of the book. I remember directing previous students to the website to go through the objectives. Mr. Coleman and Westcott scored a big touchdown by introducing the book with the detailed objectives. In a previous article "How To Pass Your CWNA on Your First Try" I stressed the need for owning the objectives. This is an irreplaceable study map. In this edition of the book it is right there.

Contents and relevance are a huge indicator of a well written book. The CWNA third edition book for the PW0-100 exam carried thirteen chapters. Mr. Coleman reflects the huge advancements in WLAN technology by increasing the contents of the PW0-104 study guide to eighteen chapters. In comparing, one would observe the new subject areas High Throughput (HT) which covers 802.11n, Cooperative Control, advancements in the UNII band, new innovations in site surveying, Quality of Service(QoS), Spatial Multiplexing and Beamforming. This is extremely commendable considering the rapid changes in WLANs. In terms of relevance, I think this book is not only suited to the potential test taker but should be a must read for any professional in a networking environment. The diagrams and illustrations are truly there for learning and are not decorative. They are pertinent, up to date and informative. I am highly impressed with the chapter on RF Math and Spread Spectrum Technologies. The examples are well explained,attesting to the fact that what we have here is a truly student oriented text.

An authors choice of language can definitely be a positive or a negative. I've read books where the terminology used was irrelevant, confusing, almost mechanical. The flow of information in this text is almost automatic because of the author's style. The student/reader will gain immensely in terms of developing that language of commonality needed to explain concepts to the non IT person or converse with the trained IT professional. In a remarkably subtle approach, definitions are "snuck" in the presentation. This technique challenges the reader to want to know more, thus fostering research. The book also accomplishes this by providing the reader with a list of websites from which can be obtained current information. This book succeeds in maintaining the 80/20 rule by focusing on the 20% of the issue that makes 80% of the difference.

Included with the text is a glossary that also helps to prepare the learner who wishes to move forward to the advanced security certification. I have not gotten my hands on that new edition, but I am confident that being written by "Mr. Multipath" it will be off the hook. At the end of each chapter can be found a set of questions with answers and explanations. These questions are not run of the mill page fillers but are actually structured like some of the certification test questions. A CD comes with the text but unlike some books this one first, works and provides a test engine, flash cards and white papers.

In concluding I will give two thumbs up to the authors of this text. I believe it reflects what the organization thinks of wifi as a whole and their clients in particular. Being a believer in the importance of the CWNP program and recognizing what they have contributed to the world through their efforts, I can only expect more and more quality books. Gardening For the Birds

One of the most beautiful sounds from the great outdoors is the sound of singing birds. Nature's song makers have long been welcome visitors to our gardens, providing valuable services such as pest control and pollination as well as adding beauty to the surroundings. Is your garden a welcome haven for avian visitors?

To attract and keep birds to your gardens, you need to step back and take a "bird's eye" view of your property. Birds are going to be looking for a few specific things before they decide to call your garden home, and if you can provide those things, you'll attract a lot of feathered friends.

First of all, does your garden provide food and water? Everything needs to eat, so think about what sorts of food your garden can offer. Insects, berries, seeds, and acorns are all food sources for several types of birds. Set up a few feeding stations to offer food; if you place them carefully, you'll be able to watch the birds from your home or from a sitting area in your garden. With an eye to water, consider adding a birdbath (change the water daily to prevent mosquito larvae), or a small pond to your yard. Birds need to drink and to bathe, so they're definitely going to be appreciative of clean water.

Secondly, does your garden provide shelter and hiding areas? Most birds are prey for something else, so they need places that they can hide from predators, and safe places to build nests and raise their young. Hedges, left unshorn, offer great bird places, as do most trees. Consider putting up bird houses to give your birds a place to raise their young in safety and comfort.

Finally, is your garden planted with the kinds of plants that will attract specific kinds of birds? Do a little research into the types of birds that you want to attract, and plant the sorts of things they'd like to see.
