Court Reporting Careers - Certification As a Court - Verbatim Reporter

A verbatim reporter is also known as a court reporter, usually specialized in shorthand writing, and transcripts the spoken work in a courtroom and during other official proceedings and such. Upon passing this evaluation, the NCRA awards applicants the RPR certification, which is maintained through membership of the NCRA and the undertaking of continued education.

After the RPR qualification, reporters may opt to take the second highest certification offered by the NVRA which is the RMR certification (Registered Merit Reporter).

1. The written test is exactly as before with the same pass percentage.

2. The speed skills test differs in the way that applicants are required to produce transcripts at 200-260 words per minute (varying for different sections of the test) required, again, at 95% accuracy.

This certification is also maintained through membership and continued education.

The highest qualification on offer by the NCRA is the RDR certification (Registered Diplomate Reporter). This qualification can only be attempted by RMR certified reporters. This certification is gained after taking a written test to evaluate the applicant's knowledge.

1. The written test is a comprehensive 105 minute test to evaluate the applicants knowledge on reporting practices, transcript production, management, marketing, education etc. the pass percentage is again at 70.

NVRA (National Verbatim Reporters Association)

The NVRA follows a similar pattern for the award of a certification. The transcription techniques required to take the examination are taught both at online court reporting schools and on traditional college/ university campuses, both of which train applicants well enough to pass easily;

1. The knowledge test is along the same lines as the NVRA's test and is attempted for 90 minutes.

1(a). This test is also a 100+ question test with a pass percentage of 70%.

2. The Speed Skills test is also similar, however due to the difference in reporting techniques used, the NVRA requires applicants to complete the test sections at a rate of 200-250 words a minute (differing for the three parts of this test).

Upon the completion of this evaluation, the NVRA awards the CVR (Certified Verbatim Reporter) certification. This is also maintained through continued education and membership with the NVRA.

• The test solution will be in the same neighborhood but asked in a different way (pay attention to questions asked similarly; if something is asked multiple times with similar variations, it is important and it could be on the actual certification test; e.g.: Save, Save As, Save as Web Page, etc)


• Learn what is under the menu options and shortcuts (on the test, you may have to click the down arrow to show all of the options, so it is important to know what options are under what menu title; it may ask you to complete a task with ONLY using shortcuts)


• Repeat and repeat again until you can pass the practice test with over a 90% twice in a row before taking the certification exam

Be honest with yourself. If you are not ready to take it then don't. You will get a better sense of your skills if you are honest and know what you need to work on before you sit down to test. Below you will find some tips to remember as you take the test:

• Remember it is a solution not a question


• It is a test of procedures that provide a result (there are many ways to get the answer, but the test is designed to get you to follow a procedure to obtain the desired result; the procedure taken is more important than the actual result


• The answer is in the solution (look for the words that relate to a menu option; it's more of a procedure that provides an answer)


• Read the solution twice before starting (first read it to get an understanding of what the question is asking; the second time read for clues that may lead you to the answer)


• Read it again before hitting next to make sure you have done all that the problem asked you to do (always double check your solution to make sure you have done EXACTLY what they were asking; before hitting next, check your spelling against what is written)


• It is also a test of how you well follow instructions (remember that they take off for incorrect spelling; remember to type the words exactly as they have and to put them exactly where they want them)


• Remember that you don't need a perfect score to pass (it is a good idea to be aware of your weaknesses before taking the test, so if there is a solution on the test that you don't know how to do, skip it and go to one that you know; it is a timed test and if you fail, remember what you missed, because the next test will have more of those solutions than the first time)

Remember the tests are more than about guessing the right answer (A, B, C, D); it is about whether you can DO THE WORK. Remember when your certificate comes that your scores are not listed, so no one will know what they are.   The certificates show that you are a professional that can handle most operations in the Office Product Line that you tested in. They tell an employer if you can maneuver around the product and get the request done.

Microsoft Certification: The New MCTS Tracks And Exams

Microsoft is revamping its certification tracks, and will eventually retire the familiar MCSE certificatons. The new certification setup is much like Cisco's, where there are specialist certifications to go along with the more general CCNA, then mid-level certifications such as the CCNP, and then a more-advanced practical exam modeled somewhat after the coveted CCIE certification.

Microsoft's new specialist exams are the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) exams. As of March 2006, there were five separate MCTS Tracks. Three of them deal with .NET Framework 2.0; these are the Web Application, Windows Applications, and Distributed Applications certifications. Each of these separate certifications requires the candidate to pass two exams. There is also a one-exam SQL Server 2005 certification, as well as a BizTalk Server 2006 single-exam certification.

The initial question is "Why is Microsoft doing this?" According to their website, MS feels that IT hiring managers today have a tough time deciding which computer certifications best identify job candidates who best meet their needs. I know it's easy to take verbal shots at Microsoft (it'll be an Olympic sport one day), but this new series of certs does have appeal for hiring managers, which can only help qualified candidates. Instead of the more-general MCSE, which does still suffer from the overcertification of NT 4.0 MCSEs back in the day, these more-specific certifications will make it easier for the job candidate to prove that they can do the job - and easier for the hiring manager to make an informed decision.

Microsoft hasn't announced the track that will eventually replace the MCSE, but this track will be revealed with the next client-server Windows release. It's up to you to stay informed of these changes, so I recommend you visit Microsoft's certification website often. "I didn't know" isn't much help once a certification expires!
